Royal Canadian Legion Branch

Around and About

This page is being introduced with the idea of keeping everyone up-to-date with what is going on in the wider community. As the page gets built you will see notices for events at other local Legion Branches, local military units and the various cadet corps supported by your Bowness Legion Branch 238. Sometimes these might just be a quick note or a hot link to their sites. Scroll down and enjoy!

Invictus Games

Invictus Games

The Invictus Games are an international Paralympic-style multi-sport event, created by Britain’s Prince Harry, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing. Named after Invictus, Latin for “unconquered” or “undefeated” the event was inspired by the Warrior Games, a similar event held in the United States. The first Invictus Games took place in 2014 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, United Kingdom.

This year the “Invictus Games” are being held in Toronto, Ontario from 23 – 30 September 2017. These Games will bring together more than 550 competitors from 17 nations for 8 days of fierce competition. As well as countries who participated in the 2014 and 2016 Invictus Games, Ukraine and Romania will take part in their first ever Invictus Games.

BOWNESS SKATEBOARD PARK ON 77TH AT NW

NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN IN 2017

The Branch Webmaster visited the Bowness Community Association to ask what is happening. It seems the city has not mentioned anything to the association about a start that was originally scheduled for June this year. There was a rumour that it was going to kick off in August but now it seems it is going to be completely re-tendered. There is nothing on the city’s web site that gives an update. If anyone can tell us what is REALLY happening we would like to know as the area where the skateboard facility is to be built is close by the Branch 238 War Memorial.
