Royal Canadian Legion Branch

Community

LOCATION

Bowness Branch No: 238, Royal Canadian Legion is very much a part of the Bowness and Montgomery communities on the west side of Calgary. These independent communities amalgamated in the 1950s with Calgary. They lie alongside the Highway No 1 (Trans-Canada) and are great places to take a break from your journey. The Branch has often been described as “The Last Waterhole West!”

BOWNESS – QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK SKATEBOARD INSTALLATION THIS SPRING AND SUMMER

Well everyone – as you know NOTHING happened! The city has said nothing other than a rumour that the project has to be re-bid.

Our volunteers restored the lettering on the cenotaph itself.

Excellent thanks to Past-President Mike Grace and Comrade Jim Balsillian with the help of Branch Poppy Committee Chair, Brian (Chuck) Cherry for working on our Branch Cenotaph.

MEMBERSHIP

Becoming a member is easy. If you are a Canadian or Commonwealth citizen in good standing then you can be a part of this growing and proud community organisation.

If you have served in the military your status would be classified as “Ordinary Member.” If you have a relative that served in the military, your status would be “Associate Member” and if you know no one who has served do not worry as you would become an “Affiliate Member” on acceptance just as the other two membership classes have to have their membership applications accepted. All members have the vote at our General Meetings. The membership dues are:

Ordinary Member: $45.00 per year  (no matter what age you are). Thank you for serving in the Canadian or Commonwealth Armed Forces or Royal Canadian Mounted Police!

All Other Memberships: $52.00 per year for 18 – 65 years of age; and

Seniors: $45.00.

Being a member has many benefits that are displayed throughout this website or call the office at (403) 247-1234 for more information – and see you soon!

COMMUNITY EFFORTS

The Branch donates monies raised to many different local organizations. We may also get involved in construction projects such as the playground almost on the corner of 85th Street NW and Bowness Road NW (just west of the Bowness Lions and Scouts building).

From the societies doing research for causes of illness to the sports camps for the young. We donate towards leadership programs, education, etc.

Donations made last year included – but were certainly not limited to:

Salvation Army, Parkinson Society of Southern Alberta; Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada; Museum of the Regiments; Canadian Liver Association; Bowness Community Association; Canadian Autism Society; Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind; Bowness Boys and Girls Club; Crowchild Scouts; 604 (Moose) Air Cadets, Silver Springs Scouts; Edgemont Scouts & Cubs; Captain Jackson Navy League Cadets – just to name a few!

POPPY CAMPAIGN

One of the commitments we make when we are initiated as members into the Royal Canadian Legion is to support the annual Poppy Campaign. All the funds raised go to supporting Veterans and/or their families who need our assistance. Volunteers are always needed for the month that the campaign runs. Of course there are Poppy Fund background activities running all year such as the Veterans Food Bank. The need in Calgary this year has become very necessary with the low economy.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

On November 11th the Bowness Community Association Assembly Hall has to be prepared by the Branch so please do not try to enter the hall until 10:00 a.m. The ceremony starts with the Colour Party marching on the Colours  at 10:45 a.m. led by a pipe band. The Wreath Laying Ceremony is also held in the Bowness Community Centre (AKA Sportsplex) and not at the Cenotaph in Queen Elizabeth Park.

Organizational and families wreaths can be paid for and purchased through the Branch before October 21 and must be picked up before November 11. The branch is no longer able to  store family or organizational wreaths so they must be recovered immediately after the ceremony. Any wreaths that are not picked up by Nov 11 will be taken to the Calgary Poppy Office for recycling.

Legion building hours for Remembrance Day are 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. – but open only to Members and ONE guest until 4:00 p.m. then open to the public for the remaining hours.

CASINO

We  also run a casino about every 18 months.  The last Casino was run on Tuesday, June 20th & Wednesday, 21st 2017 – we barely made it with enough volunteers this year!! Come on members – the income from the Casinos directly affects the services we try to provide to you in the branch. In addition, the revenue from this effort goes back to the Bowness/Montgomery communities as well. Take a look at the donation list.

IF IT WASN’T FOR “THE FEW” GREAT VOLUNTEERS –  THINGS WOULD JUST NOT HAPPEN!
